Katadyn Statement on the Warning issued by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) regarding the Product “Pocket Silver“

February 27, 2013

On February, 25, 2013, the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) issued a warning regarding the use of the product “Pocket Silver”.

As the producer of our Micropur products for the disinfection and conservation of drinking water, we have more than 80 years of experience with silver and water. There are many studies documenting clearly both the effectiveness and the toxicology of silver.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the concentration of silver in drinking water may not exceed 0.1 mg/l (0.1 ppm). All of our Micropur products conform to this requirement and are certified for use by the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health as a biocide for the treatment of drinking water.

Colloidal silver as produced by the device „Pocket Silver“ has a concentration of silver that is up to 100‘000 times higher. This corresponds to 10‘000 ppm instead of the maximum allowed 0.1 ppm. In a concentration higher than 0.1 ppm, silver can no longer be excreted by the body and is deposited in the organs. This in return may lead to grey skin discoloration.

Supporters of colloidal silver propagate a healing effect similar to the one of antibiotics. The Katadyn Group has always distanced itself from statements of this kind and advised against the use of colloidal silver. We therefore welcome the position of the Swiss Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH). However, we would have appreciated a general warning against the use of silver products with a dosage higher than 0.1 ppm.
